I'm your man
9/10 “This is a remarkable, highly skilled and moving work of theatre. The actors won a round of applause for their superb skipping routine alone and a standing ovation at the end. It’s rare to see theatre as immediate, sweaty and full of life and emotion as this one. Don’t miss it.” - Elissa Blake, The Sun-Herald
“Astonishingly authentic … Oades has an extraordinary ability to take us into different worlds.”
- John McCallum, The Australian
“A ground-breaking piece of documentary theatre … Inadvertent poetry abounds” - Rebecca Harkins-Cross, The Age
For 18 months theatre-maker Roslyn Oades and her trusty tape recorder followed a determined young boxer from Western Sydney through his preparations for a world-title fight. I’m Your Man is the story of who she met along the way: past legends, up-and-comers and failed contenders whose lives have been irreversibly changed by the fight game.
A sweaty, energy-fuelled study of masculinity, I’m Your Man is a compelling tale of courage and its cost. Using an innovative headphone-verbatim technique, the actors are able to channel the words of real-life boxing legends, transporting you into the boxer’s world of sweaty gyms and back-stage dressing rooms.
I’m Your Man is the final part in a trilogy of headphone-verbatim plays titled Acts of Courage. This collection - which also includes Stories of Love & Hate and Fast Cars & Tractor Engines - is now available through Currency Press. Buy now >>
