Historically, humans have long used ‘new technologies’ to attempt contact with the non-human, particularly in times of grief and uncertainty. After World War I, bereaved families turned to ‘ghost photography’ to connect with their dead; Russian scientists were the first of many to transmit radio broadcasts to “extra-terrestrial civilizations”; and popularisation of tape recorders gave birth to Electronic Voice Phenomena – hidden messages discovered in audio recordings upon playback.
